Offer My Isaac

Staying at home

Regarding a personal relationship with our Lord:

I was a Navy brat, so moving and change were common occurrences for me. I came to faith in Alaska, and soon after moved to Maryland, where within a robust youth group, I grew in faith and fellowship over our 3 years living there. Then we moved to Maine, where that kind of fellowship and support wasn’t available to me. That time, however, was a precious time as I deepened my personal devotion to God. God ordained these “seasons” for me.

Shouldn’t we Christians adapt to these Covid times and deepen our personal relationship with our Lord, perhaps enter a season of monasticism, meet in small groups safely to protect everyone —- especially the unsaved? Why are we instead crying conspiracy and challenging Covid safeguards all the way to court?

There is a worship song entitled, “I Offer My Isaac.” Do you know the story from Genesis 22, where God tells Abraham he wants him to offer his one son, whom he loves as a sacrifice to God.  It was a test to see if he trusted God.  As Abraham prepared to offer Isaac on the altar, God interrupts and provides a ram in the bushes for the sacrifice.  We need to offer our Isaac: church. Church is a good thing that God encourages us to have, just as Isaac was a good blessing sent from God to Abraham. But are we now placing church gathering above our personal devotion to God?  For a season, we may need to offer church.

1 Peter 4: 7, 8

“The end of all things is near; therefore, be of sound judgement and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer. Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins.”
